Brady lacks energy against the Vikings

A lack of energy contributed to Brady’s first loss of the season Friday against the Bertrand Vikings 42-6.

“Our kids came out flat against them,” head coach Andy Seamann said. “We were waiting for them to do something and were back on our heals. Against a team like Bertrand you can’t sit back.”

Bertrand scored 20 points in the first quarter followed by 22 points in the second quarter.

The Eagle’s game plan was to establish the run, and then let that lead to bigger plays in the passing game, Seamann said.

Bertrand locked down a running game that collected 224 yards for the Eagles the previous week.

Brady managed only 64 yards on 39 carries. Senior Eric Roe led the team with 30 rushing yards, followed by Matt Nieman with 29 yards and Levi DeStefano adding 18 yards on three carries.

Trevor Mann completed five passes for 39 yards before leaving the game with an injury in the third quarter.

His targets were Chase Viter who caught two passes for 20 yards. Levi DeStefano, Cody Most and Jon Taullie each caught a pass combining for 19 yards.

A bright spot for the Eagles was freshman Matt Niemann, Seamann said, who replaced Mann at quarterback and played well.

“Matt usually plays kick and punt return for us but he stepped up when Trevor went down,” Seamann said. “He set up and eventually scored our only touchdown.”

After the third quarter that included Brady’s only score, neither team reached the endzone in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles face another quality team in Amherst this Friday.

“Amherst is a good team that returns many players from last year’s playoff team,” Seamann said. “They run the ball and use play action to set up long pass plays.”

With that, Seamann said the preparation this week will focus on the Eagles.

“We can only control what we do and how we do it,” Seamann said. “The team needs to get back to focusing on the process and playing at a high energy level.”
