Haake scores 30 against Eagles
Swedes defeat Southern Valley.
OXFORD—Swede boys coach Kent Koehn isn’t sure how his team committed 27 turnovers against Southern Valley and still managed to win by 13 points.
Gothenburg jumped on the Eagles early and cruised to a 53-40 victory on the road Thursday.
“It’s not a trend I care to continue,” Koehn said, “but when we’ve had 20 or more turnovers in a game, we’ve won. I don’t understand it.”
But a win is a win, he said, no matter how ugly.
“We found ourselves standing around a lot in the first half,” Koehn said. “Then we moved the ball better in the second half and made them work harder.”
Gothenburg led 14-8 after the first period and managed a 29-22 halftime advantage despite a strong Eagle comeback effort.
In the second half, Koehn changed to a match-up zone defense that he said worked well and didn’t allow many Eagle shots.
“We’ve never played well at Southern Valley,” Koehn said. “To come away from there with a 13-point win is pretty good.”
Senior Landen Haake led Gothenburg with a double-double earning 30 points and 11 assists. Mark Hilderbrand added nine points while Derek Franzen pulled down five rebounds.
“We’re still showing a lack of experience on the court,” Koehn said. “We’ve got to find a way to get past that.”
