Early deficit dooms Melons in 9-3 loss
Lack of hits plagued the Senior Melons in their loss to Overton last Wednesday.
Overton wasted no time scoring as three runners crossed home plate in the first inning, and four more runs were added in the third en route to a 9-3 win over Gothenburg June 5.The Melons struggled in the early innings with only two hitters reaching base. Meanwhile, Overton used five hits, including two doubles, to jump out to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
A pitching change in the top of the fourth contained Overton’s offense as Trey Kolbo gave up one run in four innings, and struck out seven batters.
The Melons used that momentum in the bottom half of the fourth to threaten with three runners reaching third base.
Chase Ostergard gained first on an error by the Overton shortstop and advanced to second base on the play.
Two passed balls thrown to Trey Kolbo allowed Ostergard to score the Melons first run.
In the fifth inning Bryce Kowalewski and Ostergard walked and Walker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Another walk, to Kolbo, forced in a run.
Overton was held scoreless after the fourth inning but Gothenburg wasn’t able to get more than one runner into scoring position.
A single to left field, and a passed ball during a Walker at bat, put Ostergard on second base. Kolbo then hit a ball to right field, scoring a run for the Melons before a strikeout ended the game, 9-3.
Justin Larson started the game for the Melons and Kolbo threw four innings in relief.
Gothenburg hopes to win a couple games this week hosting McCook on Wednesday (tonight). The Melons travel to Broken Bow on Saturday, will play at Kearney on Sunday and will host Cambridge next Tuesday.
