Girls scoring comes from variety of events
Reeves sets meet, school records
Stiff competition, more than the stiff wind, affected Gothenburg’s girls track team Friday at the Broken Bow Invitational.
The Swedes came in fourth place with 60 points. McCook breezed to the title with 128 points compared to Holdrege in second with 109.
“Our girls team is pretty balanced,” Swede coach Steve Reeves said. “We’ve got the ability to score in a lot of different events. Some of the field events competition was very strong particularly in the shot and discus. There were some very quality people there.”
Other concurrent school activities limited participation for some Swede athletes.
“We had people missing which limited our ability to run the relays,” the coach said. “We only competed in the 4x100.”
Tiani Reeves earned the only gold medals for Gothenburg and did so in impressive fashion. Her time of 25.5 seconds in the 200-meter dash tied the meet record.
She erased the meet record in the triple jump with a distance of 37-11, which broke her own school record by more than a foot. She also won the long jump with a leap of 18-5.5.
Regan Geiken took silver in the 400-meter dash (1:02.2) while running second to Molly Sughroue of McCook.
The Swede coach praised Taylor Mroczek for her efforts on the track.
“I was particularly pleased with Taylor,” Reeves said. “She ran some good times in the hurdles and ran a good leg on the relay.”
Gothenburg hosts the Dutch Zorn Invitational Friday. Quality athletes are expected from seven schools including McCook, Lexington and Kearney Catholic.
Reeves is expecting another top effort from his team.
“I’m really pleased with how our girls are performing and competing hard to represent Gothenburg well,” he said.
