Wrestlers fight back to win dual
Wrestlers win eight matches against Sidney.
From the looks of things at the beginning of Gothenburg’s wrestling dual against Sidney Friday night, it wasn’t going to be the Swedes’ night in the spotlight.
Four straight losses began at 135 pounds with returning state qualifier Chris Hyde falling to state medalist Ryan Roach in 4:49.
Then three more inexperienced wrestlers were defeated before Kyle Demoret started the turn-around at 160 pounds when he won a 7-0 decision.“Sidney has a decent team,” said coach Eric Manstedt. “Things didn’t look too good at the beginning but we turned things around.”
The Swedes went back and forth with the Red Raiders through the upper weights.
Jeron Seimer was pinned at 171 and Tre Ostergard responded with a pin of Alex Bond in 48 seconds.
After Tommy France was pinned in the 215-pound class, the Swedes trailed 31-14.
“I started counting points,” Manstedt said. “I knew we’d need five straight wins to pull it off.”
That’s what he got.
Dane Ehlers got the first one with a pin at the heavyweight level. Then Mitch Spiegel, Dillon Larson and Tanner Schwanz followed at 103, 112 and 119.
That pushed the Swedes ahead but Manstedt said Justin Larson needed to pin or get a technical fall to put the dual out of reach of the Raiders.
Larson put Barrett Browne to his back several times but the clock kept him from managing the pin.
With a 15-0 technical fall, though, Larson scored enough points to give Gothenburg the surefire win regardless of how the last match went.
Bryce Eggleston wasn’t to be outdone at 130 pounds, though. He finished off the meet with a pin to leave the score 45-31.
“It was a huge team effort,” Manstedt said. “Sidney had a couple of returning state medalist and they’re a traditionally tough team. I feel good about getting that win.”
