Swede girls stick with Red Raiders

Loss drops Gothenburg to 2-6

SIDNEY—Had it not been for a struggle to score in the third period, the Gothenburg girls may have celebrated a first-round victory in their inaugural appearance at the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout last week.

As it was though, a two-point halftime lead disappeared and the Swedes spent most of the second half just keeping up as the Red Raiders earned a 46-43 win.

Gothenburg trailed 8-6 at the end of the first quarter but came back to carry a 21-19 advantage into the halftime break.

Sidney rallied in the third period to regain the lead and the Red Raiders held on for the win.

Three Swedes scored in double figures. Brittyn Munster led the way with 14 points including a pair of three-pointers and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.

She also pulled down seven rebounds.

Jacey Wiggins added 11 points while Taylor Wolf pitched in 10.

For the Red Raiders, Karissa Segelke had a game-high 21 points, including eight in the fourth period.

The Raiders advanced to play Cheyenne South in the semi-finals while Gothenburg faced Love Christian Fellowship High School of Denver, CO, in the consolation semi-finals on Friday.

Results of the Friday and Saturday games from the tournament were too late for the early holiday deadline of The Times.

Full results will be printed in next week’s edition.
