Gothenburg girls down Cozad in three sets
COZAD—Despite a dismal record, Cozad’s girls had some moments of greatness last week in Gothenburg’s head-to-head match on the Haymakers’ parents night.
Still, those moments were too few and far between to stand up to the Swede fire power at the net on Oct. 23.
Gothenburg hammered the Haymakers 25-12, 25-16, 25-8.“I felt like we controlled the game throughout,” said coach Mary Clark. “The girls played with a lot of energy and that’s how we play best.”
The Swedes never let the Haymakers string together more than a couple points the whole night.
“Before the game, we stressed to the girls to play our style of ball,” Clark said. “We wanted them to keep the tempo up and keep swinging because we are usually successful when we stay on the attack.”
Gothenburg attacked plenty, racking up 42 kills in the three sets, including 12 by junior hitter Regan Geiken.
Junior setter/hitter Aryn Meisinger offered 12 set assists as well.
“It was nice to see our setters mixing up the offense,” Clark said. “We were able to do a lot of different things.”
Gothenburg’s defense was also spot-on, picking up 58 total digs, including 14 by Meisinger and 13 by Geiken.
“The girls seem to like to play to the crowd,” the coach said. “When the gym is loud, they seem to have more intensity.”
Gothenburg moved to 22-4 with the victory while Cozad fell to 4-22 to finish out the regular season.
