One person is dead and a suspect is in custody following a brief pursuit and crash in Lexington.

Just before midnight Monday, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper attempted a traffic stop of a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup for violating a stop sign and reckless driving at 6th and Grant Streets.

The pickup driver failed to stop, ran a stop sign and proceeded south on Highway 283. A brief pursuit ensued, NSP officials said.

The pickup continued southbound over an overpass on Highway 283. After running a red light at the intersection of Highway 283 and Cattlemen Drive, the pickup collided with a westbound 1995 Ford F150 pickup.

Officials said the impact of the collision caused the Ford pickup to burst into flames. The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The name of the driver killed has not been released pending identification and notification of family.

However the driver of the Dodge Ram has been identified as Destry S. Swartz, 22, Coats, KS. Swartz and a 17-year old juvenile male passenger from Lexington were not injured.

Swartz was arrested and lodged in the Dawson County Jail on charges of second offense driving under the influence, felony motor vehicle homicide, felony operation of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and willful reckless driving.

The Lexington Police Department and the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the South Central Allied Law Enforcement System (SCALES), are investigating the crash.
