Workers from Paulsen Inc. of Cozad started Monday on a project that will create more patio space in front of Dudley Elementary.

The idea behind the construction project, estimated to cost $19,000, is to enlarge the waiting area for parents and elementary students along Avenue G.

Half of the berm between the west doors of the building will be replaced with concrete.

Teachers suggested the change which wasn’t on the district’s long-term plan.

During Monday night’s school board meeting, maintenance director Jay Holmes said the project is hoped to be completed by Aug. 1.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Teahon said the family of long-time school supporter Max Turnquist plan to buy school benches from memorial money donated after his death.

In related action, the board agreed to pay Paulsen’s—the sole bidder—$67,500 to install 18-foot parking stalls and a new sidewalk along Avenue I, between 13th and 15th Streets.

Work has begun on the project that is also expected to be done by Aug. 1.

Widening stalls in the parking lot brought about the need for more stalls.
