Brady girls win track district
14 Eagles headed to Omaha
SUTHERLAND—Three Brady relays have qualified for the state track championships in Omaha this week, pushing the number of Eagles to 14 competitors making the trip to Burke Stadium.
“Getting a couple of relays in as additional qualifiers is fantastic,” said coach Rich Britten.
Five Eagle girls earned a spot at state, including the 4x100 relay which broke its own school record during the D-10 district in Sutherland on May 9.
“And the crazy thing is we still haven’t gotten all the hand-offs down,” Britten said.
Shaylin McClellen, Valerie Most, Autumn Hild and Megan Polt combined for a 51.1-second time to win the event.
McClellen will also compete in the long jump while Most made state in the pole vault and high jump.
Josie Palmer joins the group as the district winner in the high jump, clearing a personal best 5-3.
On the boys side, both the 4x400 and the 4x800 relays had good enough times to get into the state meet as additional qualifiers.
Three of the seven boys who make up the two relays will compete in other events at state as well.
Sawyer Burke will run the 200 and will high jump in addition to the 4x400 relay.
Bryley Roper has four events including both relays, the triple jump and the 400-meter dash while Eric Roe will run the 300-meter hurdles at state along with the 4x400 relay.
Runners on the 4x400 relay are Burke, Roe, Zach Mann and Roper. The 4x800 relay includes Tyrel Grasz, Cole Viter, Troy Lusk and Roper.
“It will be fun,” Britten said. “We have a chance to do very well.”
Two throwers also qualified for the state meet. Levi Widick was the district champ in the discus while Ryan Porter was second in the shot.
“With this large number of kids, I believe we have could be good enough to be in the mix for some team hardware if we compete at the level we’re capable of,” Britten said.
Boys high jump and girls long jump and pole vault will kick off the Class D portion of the state championship at 9 a.m. Friday, as well as the 4x800 relay.
