Ground broken for Comfort Suites

A snowstorm that dumped over a foot of wet snow on Gothenburg didn’t dampen the spirits of developers Terry Jessen and Diana Unterseher at the ground-breaking for their 74-unit Comfort Suites motel.

In fact, sunny skies and temperatures rising into the 60s Sunday brought out smiling faces and a large gathering for the ceremony.

With some good weather and an aggressive construction schedule by general contractor Paulsen Inc., the couple hopes to open the facility by May 1.

Jessen noted that it was through the efforts of the Gothenburg City Council, Chamber of Commerce and Gothenburg Improvement Company that they considered building a motel here.

However, for the project to be successful, he said, it will require the support of the entire community and area.

Jessen, who is an accountant by trade but who is equally at home on heavy construction equipment, offered a few numbers and facts about work done so far on the project:

1—average number of breakdowns of equipment per hour.

4—number of months involved in the project thus far.

6—number of feet of fill dirt elevation added to the motel site.

10—average number of people working on the project per day.

20—the most people working at the same time (last week).

50—approximate number of people who have worked on the project site so far.

63—number of acres in the development.

74—number of motel rooms to be built.

250—number of people who will work at any one time on construction.

800—approximate number of truck loads of dirt that have been hauled into the site so far. Six trucks have been rolling at the same time with an average of one truck arriving at the site every five minutes.

3,600—approximate number of meals eaten in Gothenburg by construction team so far.

$250,000—operating dollars that have been spent in Gothenburg so far. Among the expenses is over a semi load of fuel.

$1.75 million—economic impact of those dollars turning seven times in the Gothenburg area.
