Swedes pound out nine extra-base hits in 13-0 win at GINW
Revenge was on their minds as the Gothenburg Swedes returned to the scene of one of their softball losses Thursday at Grand Island Northwest.
The message may be: Don’t get the Gothenburg girls angry.
The Swedes pounded out a school record nine extra base hits and had 16 total hits while pounding the Vikings 13-1.
Several things were in our favor, Swede coach Roger Neujahr said, revenge being among them.
“We were truly disappointed in the finals of the Northwest tournament in how we played and in particular in how we batted,” he said of their 4-3 loss. “We had probably our worst hitting game of the year. We didn’t adjust (then), this time we did.”
Secondly, the wind was with the hitters, although the same could be said for the Viking batters.
“The wind was at our back in the batter’s box and we hit some shots,” the coach said.
Finally, Neujahr said Gothenburg pitcher Bre Messersmith had one of her best pitching outings of the season.
“Our drop ball pitcher, Bre, was back to her old self,” he said. “She threw the inside and outside drop ball probably better than she had all year.”
That turned into 10 ground outs in 24 opportunities.
“When you see our first baseman has a bunch of put-outs, that means Bre’s drop was working,” Neujahr said.
The hit parade included a single, double and triple by Messersmith, a single and two doubles by Alisha Ballmer, two doubles by Brittyn Munster and a single and double each by KaTrina Winter and Vanessa Linegar and a double by Roni Putnam.
Gothenburg jumped out to a 4-0 after two innings and then added solo runs in three of the next four frames before busting loose for six more runs in the seventh.
