Governor visits Dudley
Heineman presents parental involvement award.
Dudley Elementary students are now privy to some information about Nebraska’s 39th governor.
Gov. Dave Heineman visited Gothenburg Public Schools Friday to present an award for parental involvement at Dudley and to tell students a little about himself.
During an assembly with youngsters, staff and parents, Heineman congratulated the school for how involved its parents are, noting that it “makes an incredible difference.”
“It’s not our job to do homework but to help and impact learning,” he said, noting that the award means that parents, grandparents and neighbors care about students.
A vital part of education, Heineman said, is reading which is something he does everyday in his job as governor.
Heineman, who grew up in Falls City and graduated from Wahoo High School, praised small communities.
“If I did something wrong, my parents knew before I got home,” he said.
During a question-answer time, Heineman said he enjoys being governor. He noted that he often receives free lunch and dinner and gets to watch the sports practices of University of Nebraska-Lincoln teams.
When asked how he became governor, Heineman said he used to be lieutenant governor until former President George Bush asked then-governor Mike Johanns to become secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture which he did.
Heineman then became governor and ran successfully for election in 2006 and re-election in 2010.
The governor said there’s nothing difficult about his job.
