Brady girls win first round, advance to sub-district final
COZAD—Brady volleyball coach Lynne Johnson likes it when her team captains win the coin toss before games and choose to serve first.
It gives the Eagles an instant opportunity to get on top.
What Johnson doesn’t like, though, is the fact that the second set of nearly every match this season has plagued the Eagles.
“I don’t know what it is,” Johnson said following Monday night’s 25-10, 25-21, 25-13 win over Medicine Valley in the D2-9 sub-district. “It’s not so much that we break down on serve receive. It’s more like a lack of aggression.”
The Eagles came out strong in the first set at Cozad and hammered the Raiders, who advanced to play Brady with a three-set victory over Maywood.
Johnson said it was the fourth rotation of the second set when things started to slip.
One Raider server, she said, had six service points in a row and the Eagles were forced to come from behind.
When the first serve went back to Brady for the third set, the Eagles handled Medicine Valley with much more ease.
“We’re not going to get to start every set with the serve,” Johnson said, “so we’re going to have to figure out how to play aggressive without it.”
With the victory, the Eagles advanced to the sub-district final against Eustis-Farnam Tuesday night in Cozad.
Brady defeated the Knights earlier this season in straight sets but Johnson said nothing will come easy from here on out.
“We’re going to have to play hard the whole game,” she said.
