Big inning carries softball team to 10-8 win
Gothenburg scores seven in eighth inning.
Fireworks often come after the game at major league ball parks. They came during an extra inning Thursday as the Swedes won at Holdrege, 10-8.
An extra inning was needed after both teams scored three runs through regulation play.
Gothenburg busted loose for seven runs in the top of the eighth. The Dusters responded with five runs, but fell short in the rally.
“Holdrege played us tough,” Swede coach Roger Neujahr said. “We really didn’t get things going until the extra inning. We were probably fortunate to do that.
“And then we scored seven runs and the game should be out of control. You should win going away and we didn’t.”
Gothenburg exploded for five hits in the eighth inning. Alisha Ballmer drove in a pair of runs with a single, but was caught trying to stretch it to a double.
Five Swede errors contributed to Holdrege’s five-run rally. The Dusters had just two hits in the inning.
Gothenburg fell behind 2-0 when Holdrege scored a pair of runs on two hits in the second inning.
Roni Putnam led off the third with a single for Gothenburg and she scored on Vanessa Linegar’s double.
The Swedes took a 3-2 lead after pushing two runs across the plate in a two-out rally in the sixth.
Holdrege tied the score with a solo run in the seventh to send it to an extra inning.
“The positive thing is that we found a way to win and were fortunate to come out of that game with a win,” Neujahr said.
Linegar had three hits, including two doubles.
Bre Messersmith started on the mound and was relieved after five innings by Amanda Barkmeier.
