Junior Melons leave room to grow
Brett Mayher makes Top 10 in 2 categories.
With only three players from last year’s squad returning to the Junior Melons this summer, inexperience was a daily battle for the Gothenburg baseball team.
Averaging six errors a game and finishing with a dismal 3-18 record, it’s easy to see that lack of experience took its toll.
The Melons were 13 games into the season before they finally notched a win and there wasn’t enough time to build momentum before the Area 6 tournament.
The Juniors suffered a pair of big losses to make a quick exit from the tourney and end the year on a downer.
There is a silver lining, though.
Most of the 15 boys on the roster this year will return to the field next summer.
A number of good things came from the season, including two spots on the Juniors all-time Top 10 statistical list for Brett Mayher.
With 19 hits in 38 at-bats, Mayher finished the year with a .500 batting average to move into the No. 7 spot in that hitting category.
Mayher had 12 singles, five doubles, a triple and one home run that he hit on the home field against McCook.
Mayher also makes the Top 10 at No. 7 in on-base percentage with a .596 average in his 47 times at the plate.
Trent Good was close behind Mayher in number of total hits with 16 earning the team’s next highest batting average at .281.
Good also had the second highest number of stolen bases at 11 behind Mayher’s 14 and Gothenburg’s best earned-run average on the pitcher’s mound at 6.10.
Good faced 125 batters throwing 22 strikeouts, walking 16 batters and giving up 35 hits.
Justin Larson had the second best ERA at 6.21.
Defensively, Melon catcher Levi Walker had the most put outs with 113 in 100 innings behind the plate.
Chase Ostergard had the next highest number of put outs at first base with 89 while Good offered a team-high 29 assists.
So with strong numbers returning next summer, the Junior Melons have many reasons to look ahead.
