Pirates will be on the prowl at Harvest Festival
Pirates will be out in full force this Thursday, Friday and Saturday as Gothenburg celebrates its 95th annual Harvest Festival.
With the theme “Pirates of the Platte,” festivities begin Thursday at 5:30 p.m. with a pooch parade/dog show in Ehmen Park. A Farmer’s Market is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Ninth Street and Lake Avenue.
On Friday, a kids’ parade begins at 6 p.m. Children will gather in Ehmen Park for judging at 5:30 p.m. and the parade begins at the intersection of 16th Street and Avenue F.
A pitch and bridge tournament at the Randazzle Cafe is at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s activities begin with a pancake breakfast at the Gothenburg Airport from 7-10 p.m.
A fly-in is from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a 1 p.m. ceremony in which a refurbished cupola from the old airport office building will be dedicated to the airport. Previous airport operators C.H. “Kak” Fiese and Roger Peden and their families will be honored.
Throughout the day, there will be vintage aircraft displayed and hot air balloons and power chutes.
A dog & jog is set for 8 a.m. at the airport. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and proceeds go to the United Way.
The festival parade, beginning at 20th Street and proceeding down Lake Avenue, begins at 10:30 a.m. Lineup and judging begins at 9:30 a.m.
Chamber officials said they still seek World War II veterans who will ride on a float as grand marshals of the parade. If interested, please call the Gothenburg Chamber of Commerce at 537-3505.
Many activities are set in Ehmen Park after the parade and include food booths, arts, crafts, kids’ games, roping, a dunking booth and jumping toys.
Lunch is available there or at the United Methodist Church from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The Gothenburg Historical Museum, at 15th Street and Avenue F, will have collections on display from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A show and shine car show will be on 15th Street between Lake Avenue and Avenue F from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Several local and county organizations are sponsoring a bicycle rodeo for youngsters that begins at 1 p.m. by the park on Avenue F.
Each participant will receive a free bike helmet.
At 2 p.m., a tractor pedal pull begins at Ehmen Park with races for both kids and adults.
Chamber officials said Saturday’s Husker game against Virginia Tech that begins at 2:30 p.m. will be broadcast in the park.
Judy Block and band have a jam session scheduled in the park at 3 p.m.
The Gothenburg Volunteer Fireman are hosting a 100th year celebration from 5 p.m. to midnight at the fire hall with burgers, brats and refreshments.
Youngsters in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades are invited to a junior teen dance at the American Lutheran Church from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
