VanAcker to golf at state

Swedes end five-year streak without qualifier.

Even the best team score of the season and a couple of individual personal lows weren’t enough to fulfill the Swede golf team’s highest goal.

Gothenburg shot a team-best 344 during the B-4 district meet at Wild Horse Golf Club on Monday to finish sixth, 10 strokes shy of qualifying the team for next week’s state meet in Kearney.

“The guys made a good effort,” said coach Jim Henke, “but even our best score of the season was just not quite enough.”

But the disappointment of falling short as a team couldn’t last long because the Swedes still had reason to celebrate.

Sophomore Jeramie VanAcker played his best 18-hole round ever carding 38 and 39 for a 77 total to finish ninth and qualify for state.

“Jeramie found out that keeping focus can pay off big time,” Henke said.

VanAcker will play in the Class B state meet at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney. The first tee time is 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The state meet continues on Wednesday.

Fellow Swede sophomore Jackson Graham also shot his personal best 18-hole score. His 81 was just three strokes from a medal and a trip to state.

Scottsbluff shot an outstanding team score of 293 to win the title. The Bearcats wrapped up the top three individual spots with Andrew Holloway and Erik Krzyzanowski taking first and second, each with 72, followed by Michael Hoppes at 74.

Second-place McCook and third-place Ogallala also qualify teams for the state meet.

Henke said he is proud of the way the team performed at the end of the season.

Finishing second in the Southwest Conference meet helped the Gothenburg boys lock up the SWC Cup and sixth at district is a definite improvement.

The Swedes have good things to look forward to in the future.

“The success of the sophomores this season indicates that things are looking up for the Swedes the next two years,” Henke said.
