Brady village officials are squeezing as much as possible for the next fiscal year to keep spending down.

There are no large purchases and no major projects in the 2009-10 budget.

“We’re doing the best we can to stay within our means,” said village clerk Pam Diehl. “It’s going to be nip and tuck.”

The bottom line budget is projected to be lower than last year by just over $2,000 and the levy will drop from 48.6 cents per $100 in property value to 47.4 cents.

Still, Brady residents aren’t likely to see the village portion of their tax bill go down because the valuation set by Lincoln County jumped 8.7% to nearly $13.1 million.

That’s how the village can cover its costs and still lower the levy for the second straight year, according to village accountant Christine Haynes of Gothenburg.

Basically, she said, the village will collect enough property taxes to cover its recurring bills with little wiggle room.

“Things are tight all over,” Diehl said. “The village is no different.”

The trustees will vote on the 2009-10 budget following a public hearing during the regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.
