Brady students chosen for Boys, Girls State
Taullie, Simants named delegates.
Two Brady High School juniors have been selected as delegates to the 2010 Cornhusker Girls and Boys State.
Taina Taullie, daughter of Sam and Tammie Taullie, will attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State session in Lincoln June 6-12.
Taullie’s high school activities include band, chorus, volleyball, track, one-act play, Family Career and Community Leaders of America, speech, Student Council and flag team.
The alternate for Girls State is Kristen Boden, daughter of Chuck and Beth Boden.
Jeffrey Simants, son of Scott and Becky Simants, will join nearly 400 other high school juniors from across Nebraska at the American Legion’s Boys State in Lincoln also June 6-12.
Simants participates in band, football, basketball, track, one-act play, FCCLA, quiz bowl and Student Council.
There is no alternate for Boys State.
The selection process is stringent with only the most qualified candidates being selected to attend.
Students must be leaders in their school and must have demonstrated an interest in learning different government processes.
The annual citizenship program is designed to provide youth with a better understanding of how city, county and state governments operate.
Participants will campaign for offices, conduct elections and take part in other events.
Special lectures and presentations will be given by Gov. Dave Heineman, Supreme Court Justice John M. Gerrard and nationally-acclaimed motivational speaker JoAnne Owens-Nauslar.
Each delegate to Girls or Boys State is sponsored locally by an organization. Since Brady does not have a Legion post, the Brady Lions Club cooperates with the Gothenburg Legion.
The Lions Club will host a pancake feed on Election Day, May 11, at the Brady Methodist Church from 5-7:30 p.m.
Proceeds will go toward the sponsorship of the Boys and Girls State delegates and their transportation to and from Lincoln in June.
Taullie and Simants are planning to help serve pancakes while meeting the public.
