Cozad Hay Mill Fire Extinguished

A large fire roared to life Friday, Feb 16, at a hay mill in Cozad. The call went out at approximately 10:15 a.m., and 18 Cozad volunteer firefighters worked the fire through the afternoon.

The fire started in the sawdust shed at Island Dehy. Hay mills use sawdust as an indirect heat source for their gas-fired cooking process. The 150-foot-long, metal building was fully involved by midday. Under fire department supervision, a worker with a loader tore siding off the building so firefighters could spray water directly on the burning sawdust. Variable winds stoked the fire, and as the wind shifted, large, unpredictable flames intermittently plumed from the building, keeping firefighters well back.
