Golf team continues gaining experience
Five letter winners return for Swedes.
Golf is a game of repetition.
Every round played by a high school athlete whether on the home course or in another community adds experience and strengthens the game.
Swede golf coach Jim Henke hopes the experience his younger players gained last season and over the summer will bring positive results this spring.
Five letter winners return for the Swedes including senior Derek Franzen.
“We’re going to look to Derek to lead the group,” Henke said. “He’s looking forward to a good senior season.”
Fellow letter winners Coltin Bebensee, Matthew Marshall, Jackson Graham and Jeramie VanAcker are all underclassmen.
“The young guys picked up a lot of experience last year,” Henke said. “Just getting the opportunity to play on the different courses makes a huge difference.”
Weather has been an issue as the Swedes prepare for the spring season. Henke said there have only been a handful of days when the boys were able to get outside.
“You can only watch so much video,” the coach said. “The guys just cringe.”
Hopefully, he said, the weather cooperates for the North Platte Invite on Friday when the Swedes kick off the season.
Gothenburg will play at home on Wild Horse only three times this year at a dual with Broken Bow, for the 15-team Gothenburg Invite and at the B-4 district meet.
“Hosting the district is good in that we don’t have to travel,” Henke said, “but there is a little added pressure being at home.”
Teams in the district, which Henke says is likely the toughest in the state, include Alliance, Broken Bow, Chadron, Cozad, Gering, Gothenburg, Lexington, McCook, Ogallala, Scottsbluff, Sidney and Valentine.
It has been five years since the Swedes had a golfer qualify for state.
“These boys have the ability,” Henke said. “It’s just a matter of keeping their heads in the game. If we stay focused, we should compete well.”
Friday’s meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Iron Eagle Golf Course in North Platte.
