Basketball players earn all-conference honors
Max named girls MVP.
For the second straight year, a Gothenburg girl has earned the top honor given by basketball coaches from the seven Southwest Conference schools.
Swede senior Emily Max was the highest vote-getter in the conference to earn SWC Most Valuable Player honors at the top of the first team.
Max has earned all-conference recognition all four years of high school. She was named to the second team as a freshman and sophomore and earned the first-team honor last year.
The 6-foot senior averaged 19 points and almost nine rebounds per game for the 2009-10 season.
Jordan Geiken was named MVP last year.
Other Swede girls to earn SWC 2009-10 all-conference recognition were seniors Ali Abramson and Kira Peterson.
Both Gothenburg players were named to the third team.
On the boys side, Swede senior Landen Haake earned first-team all-conference recognition. It is his third time as an all-SWC selection in basketball.
Haake had 291 points for an average of 15 per game this season to lead the Swedes in scoring. He also topped the list this year in assists and steals with 95 and 49 respectively.
Haake was a third-team selection as a sophomore and junior.
Jeff Borer, a senior from Valentine, earned the most votes from SWC coaches and was named Most Valuable Player for the boys.
Southwest Conference officials also announced last week recipients of the first SWC Academic All-Conference honors.
To be eligible, students must have an accumulative GPA of 3.65. Additionally, they must be involved in a conference-sponsored activity at least two years during their sophomore, junior and senior year in school and must participate as a senior.
Certificates for the academic all-conference will be presented at the spring honors banquet on May 10.
