Salary increase satisfies teachers

First-year teachers will make $30,600 at Brady Public Schools this upcoming year.

The new salary is an increase of 3.5% or $1,060 from last year.

During a Monday night meeting, the Brady School Board approved the 2013-14 negotiated agreement setting a salary base and raising hourly wages for non-certified employees either 25 cents or 50 cents depending on their position.

“The teachers were satisfied,” Porter said.

In other business, plans to renovate have been tabled until August 12 allowing superintendent Bill Porter to gather information on costs and other information.

A representative from Joseph R. Hewgley and Associates, from North Platte, gave estimates on construction.

Renovating the current science room would cost between $80,000 and $90,000. With those renovations, the classroom would still be under the recommended size.

The second option is to build a new science room and preschool that would supply a larger, up- to-standard science room for $425,000.

On another matter, Lexington Glass is completing the Brady Public School window project. Windows have been installed on the north and east side of the school.

Lexington Glass will be paid $25,000 from the building fund after the window project is complete. The total cost is $148,000.

In other business, changes were made to the student/parent handbook

Reinke said the policies are set to ensure the students learn responsibility.

In other business, the board:

transferred $72,749 from the general fund to the building fund.

increased prices for breakfast and hot lunch five cents.

approved unchanged activity and faculty handbooks for 2013-14.

amended the mentor program for the upcoming school year.

decided damaged property up to $200 by students will be paid for by the students.

agreed that two tardies per class, per semester will be allowed. After a third tardy, 30 minutes of detention will be issued on a case by case basis.

reduced the amount of late work accepted. After one day the grade will be 70%, the second day 50% and after the third day, it falls into teachers discretion.
